What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?
Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

Read Now! with Taylor Swift

Fellow Taylor Swift fans and book lovers, here’s some exciting news about our favorite girl-next-door Taylor Swift!

Taylor Swift will be going to Scholastic for a unique live literacy event for students! On October 27, Taylor will appear in Read Now! with Taylor Swift, a webcast that’s exclusively for schools in the U.S. and around the world. Taylor will participate in a live interview and take questions from students in the live audience and online. The event will end with a live performance.

Schools and classrooms can begin registering for the live webcast event on August 23 at www.scholastic.com/readeveryday. But there’s more! On August 23rd, we’ll be opening an essay contest for 10 lucky students and their guardians to attend the event LIVE at Scholastic headquarters (all expenses paid!) and even meet Taylor Swift! For more details, head over to On Our Minds @Scholastic.

On a side note, have you heard Taylor’s newest song, Mine? 😀

Lunch with Lisa McMann?

Want to know how you can have lunch with NYT bestselling author Lisa McMann for you and your friends? READ ON!

Lisa McMann will fly to your nearest major US city, meet you and up to three of your closest friends at or near the airport for a late lunch/early dinner (Lisa’s buying). She will bring each of you a personalized, signed copy of GONE (the final book in the WAKE trilogy), and spend time with you chatting about whatever bookish things the winning bidder wants to talk about — the publishing process, how to be a better writer, books in general, tales of Miss Spoobin, how to roast a pork butt…whatever! In addition, the winning bidder will be presented with the amazing Miss Spoobin. (For the story on Miss Spoobin, a very special spoon friend, go here.) Get your friends to all pitch in and bid, or surprise your teen, spouse or BFF with this unique opportunity!

Blog posts you should check out

This week there are several really informative blog posts you should check out. Especially bloggers!

Book Nerds talked about Reasons You Could Be Sued: Copyright Infringement which is very informative. EVERYONE should read it. I commented saying: I also noticed several blogs using images found on Google. As I was telling someone the other day, just because Google Images, Getty Images, etc allow you to search the images they own, or have collected, does not mean that you’re entitled to take them.

And even if you took an image you found on Google, edited it on Photoshop, it does not make you ‘free’ from the copyright. You are still violating copyright.

Did you know? Giving credit to the source of a copied work does not mean that the copier is not an infringer: It just means that he or she is not a plagiarist. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission to use it.
Source: Copyright: Fair Use and the Most Common Misconceptions of Copyright Law

Remember, copyright is a serious thing, don’t take it lightly.

Kristi did a wonderful post on Advance Readers Copies: what you need to know. Can you believe ARCs cost as much or even more than the finished copy? Alxandra Braken, author of Brightly Woven also did a post that I think all bloggers should read.

Katie Alender wrote a blog post on additional note to bloggers.. which you should read too.

Go and visit the new Beautiful Creatures website and support Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia by buying BC! 😀 Some stores already have it in stock!

The 2009 Debs are touring USA and Canada! Totally cool!

Last but not least Book Depository (affiliate link) is giving away bookmarks again when you buy their books. I don’t know if they still have bookmarks left but my order from one week back arrived today with a cute bookmark!

My 8 favorite things

This is a mini challenge by Princess Bookie.

Name 8 Of Your Favorite Things (not all books either LOL).
Wordle: 8 fave things

If you can’t read the above, it says:

1. My laptop, I cannot survive without it
2. My iPod!
3. Books, they are my escape.
4. Bookstores (and libraries)
5. Chocolate chip cookies
6. Airplanes, without them, I won’t have my books/CDs etc
7. Taylor Swift, I adore her music and she’s such an amazing songwriter. ❤
8. Burt Bees lip balm, best lip balm in the world.

By the way, I would advise you to click the above image only if you use Internet Explorer. It made my FireFox crash. =(
