YA book reviews, reading and recommending since 2009

Update: contest has been extended till August 24! Scroll down for more details on how you can win LINGER!

Hi Maggie, great to have you on the blog today!
Thanks for having me. 🙂

First off, could you describe what The Wolves of Mercy Falls series is about in 150 words or less?

Oh I can do better.
1. People
2. Kissing
3. Werewolves
4. And
5. Sad
6. Things
7. Happen
8. Also
9. Some
10. Candy

Efficiency. I haz it.

If you were spending a day with Sam and Grace, where and what would you do?
We’re all introverts and we all love books. Sit around and read.

Sitting around and reading is a good way to spend a day! Would you rather be part of a band like Cole or work in a bookshop like Sam?
Can I not do both? When I was in college, I worked in a little shop that sold touristy Virginia things (www.madeinVa.com) and when I wasn’t selling giant salted hams to tourists, I was playing gigs all over Virginia and Maryland with my band Ballynoola or playing the with college pipe band I was a part of.

Maybe not as exciting as rocking it out like Cole, but I think I had most of my cake and ate it too.

In Linger, Sam would fold paper cranes out of everything. Do you fold paper cranes as well?
I actually had to teach myself how to fold them for Linger. I’m still kind of slow. I had a brief fantasy of folding them for people at book signings, but my sluggish folding would turn most events into slumber parties.

If you could go back in time and tell your 16-year-old self a piece of advice, what would it be?
Don’t take yourself so seriously. You will be much happier in life if you aren’t published by age 18. Man, grow some bangs.

BookPage called Shiver “…Beautifully written, even poetic at times, and a perfect indulgence for readers of all ages.” Ultimately, what would you like people to take away from your Mercy Falls novels?
*blush* I’d really love, most of all, to write books that stick under people’s skin — something that they carry around after they’ve shut the cover. And ultimately I’d like teens to realize that you choose what you’re going to be, no matter what your circumstances are.

Wonderful questions. Thank you!!

Thanks for stopping by, Maggie!

  8. I would work in a bookshop. Just imagine being the first one to peek into all the great new books coming out every week. Always being informed first on when your favorite author will publish something new and never missing a great book because you haven’t been in the bookshop that week! It would be fabulous!

  15. I’d rather work in a bookshop because:
    1) I don’t play any instruments
    2) If I did, it’d probably be something lame like the flute, and no band with a flute would be hardcore.
    3) I love being in bookstores, the smell, the silence, why not work in one?
    4) I could use some cash. I need a job. :’D

  16. I LOVED Shiver! It was a very quick and very good read! I haven’t had a chance to read Linger yet (since my friends are rather stingy even though they have at least 2 copies each) however I did go to the Magnificent Maggie’s signing at the Borders in Glendale! Working on my next big project for her next signing!

Hmm, I would definately say a book store. That way I can horde books forever and ever and nobody shall know of this evil plot until it is too late!
    +1 for my answer.

  17. Great interview! Maggie’s answers always make me laugh xD Hmm, I love music AND books but… I’d have to go with working at a bookshop! Being around books would make me infinitely happy 🙂

    +1 I follow Maggie! (@faeriexflash)

  18. Wonderful interview. I always love to get a glimpse into Maggie’s head. And yeah, I’d have to go with bookstore. I’m just not cool enough to be in a band. 😉

I’d rather work in a book shop! Reading all day and recommending good books! I was in the band in high school, and let’s just say we’re all better off if I keep my flute put away. 🙂

definitely a book shop. I can’t even find the rhythm in a song, so I couldn’t even be like a tambourine player. But working in a book shop thats something I could be mildly successful at.

  23. Wow well I really did love that interview. Just so interesting and Maggie is so cool 😛

Well I can’t play a musical instrument so I guess I’d work in a bookstore. I’m pretty introverted so I think that books and being surrounding by something that I take solace and comfort from would bring me out of my shell. 😛 Plus working there I’d have discount too so totally win win! 😀

+2 For being an email subscriber

  28. I’d want to work in a bookstore! In fact, I recently applied for one. 😀 My unnatural obsession with needs to be supported some way, and what better way than working AT a bookstore and getting discounts, haha!

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! I have an ARC of this from Maggie’s contest back in February but I REALLY want a finished copy to sit next to my hardcover of SHIVER. 🙂

    +5 for me! Yay!

  29. I’d want to be in a band. As much as I like the idea of working in a bookstore, I’d be broke within my first week! And all of my paychecks would go towards books, nothing else. Most definitely not a career suitable for my obsessive personality, sadly. I’d really like to be in a band though because of the close relationships that I think one would form with fellow band members. I have no musical talent whatsoever, though. However, I’ve always loved the idea of being able to play drums…

I would not only choose the bookstore, would love to work in one. Except that I don’t think I would get pain – I would just spend all the money on books! (and I can’t play an instrument to save my life)

  32. I already own the book, so I don’t have to be entered for the giveaway! I just want to say thanks for this interview! I enjoyed getting to hear from Maggie as she is now one of my favorite authors after reading Shiver and Linger. And I guess she gets what she wants because I am STILL thinking about the novels, and I’m trying to wait for an appropriate amount of time before I re-read them. I’m dying until the next book comes out.
